Canvas Artwork: Can Overseas Suppliers Deliver
Buying canvas artwork from abroad manufacturers is an area that when you first look at it could be quite simple. With large amounts of cash regard it as you normally would any risk and proceed with great caution. All very straight forward so far, normal business methods. But this is where things begin to take a few turns. If you you are normally purchasing from united kingdom suppliers then you are possibly unaware of the level of risk involved. At the very least you rely upon a common language, local laws and if everything fails the knowledge that there are a host of rules and official bodies to help you in getting back your losses.
I'll back track slightly here with an observation. If you are importing to resell then you would have looked around a lot on the internet to locate the best prices. Your research will undoubtedly have brought foreign suppliers to your attention and the many products very appealing.
The places most likely to crop up will be Singapore and Indonesia. A great choice and something of a great start. The most logical thing to do is to begin looking through their websites and get some quotations. Still all very manageable. So what is the issue? Well firstly you are only looking at the ones you found on the internet, which means just the ones who have the highest search engine position, unless you went back to page 20.
I really don't feel comfortable with that method of selection, I would rather find the most reliable supplier. What I'm after in effect is an independently verified supplier who matches strict criteria. If you are familiar with of pub guide, then you know what is meant if you also try using pub listings from the internet. The issue is of independent reviews, these suppliers are sales people and will occasionally make elaborate claims to get your money.
This is where the directories such as Alibaba should be able to assist with their gold suppliers etc. Instead they are just simple advertiser which will prioritize paying advertisers and therefore number of viewers an advert gets the same that Google sell its ppc ads.

So given that it's like the wild west out there what can be done? Well at Moko Art we were made to rely upon traditional intuition and common sense. I disregarded Indian suppliers after an awful experience with another venture and after looking at the paintings on offer China seemed the best bet.
It was a very price as well as item driven decision but the prices and the seller had yet to be verified. several emails later the field was rapidly narrowing. This is where online messengers comes into its own, a chance to quiz the person and judge a few characteristics. I'll tell you now this didn't work as he pretended to be the business owner but was in effect a simple new farmer turned sales person. The draw of the dollar was enough to turn this guy into a raving crook.
This is the big problem cash is king and with poor salaries then the chance to make a months salary off of your commission means the temptation to lie is massive.
The ultimate problems I had were product quality, they completed the order but to a low standard. Minimum possible degree of quality. That is where you need to focus, find as reliable a supplier as possible then ask your self how do I know what I am going to get and what can I do about it if it's not what you thought you were buying.
