Facebook hashtag marketing: Is your business trending?
You may have heard that Facebook has finally jumped into the #hashtag wagon. Online buzz points in the direction of brands and businesses as the ones benefitting most from this latest development in social networking.
What is a Hashtag?
A hashtag is a word or a string of words preceded by the hash symbol (#). For example: #hashtag or #hashtagistrending.
Hashtags are used in popular social networking sites to create links to conversations or images regarding the same topic. For instance, if you click #samsunggalaxytab, you will be able to read feedback and all kinds of conversations about Samsung Galaxy Tablet or any status that includes the same hashtag.
Hashtags first became a social networking tool through Twitter. It was proposed by Chris Messina who was inspired by a system used in IRS chats for years. Messina is now with Google which probably explains why the new Google+ is using it too.
Other social network sites that have hashtags are Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, Linkedin and Vine.
Guidelines in hashtag marketing
Hashtag marketing will increase your brand s reach and contribute to your business success if utilised wisely.
Here are some things to remember to maximise the effectiveness of your hashtags:
1. Be purposeful with what you put in your status.
Remember that when it comes to online searchability, content is still king, hashtags or no hashtags.
Engage your market with good content. A link to one of your own articles can spark the interest of your consumers and get the topic trending around their circles.
2. Limit your hashtags to three or less per post.
In fact, studies have shown that using only one hashtag has proven the most effective.
Too many hashtags in your status take the focus off your message. Other social network users may even mark your status as spam.
3. Do not criticize your competition in your statuses.
This is not a good trending topic that your products should be identified with and may ruin your company s reputation and credibility.
4. Keep your hashtags simple, focused and direct so consumers can easily find them.
Make sure that your hashtag is related to what you offer in the market.Avoid long-tailed hashtags, they are only used by netizens for personal purposes such as adding side comments or a pun to their statuses.
5. Respond to your hashtag audience.
It will help consumers remember your brand when you are able to answer their queries, address their concerns or acknowledge their good reviews.
