Can You Make Money with a Blog?
Ever wonder if it really is easy to make money via the Internet? One might be skeptical of the many "quick scheme" websites that claim profits in the thousands in mere weeks, but in truth it is possible to earn a sizeable income through website work. How much you earn will depend on the tools you use and the time you invest, but ultimately content is the key to bring the traffic that generates money. You won't find a simpler way to kick-start your Internet entrepreneurship than with launching a blog.
Weblogs, or blogs, are websites that allow for simple, real-time publishing and are commonly used as personal and topical journals, sites of review for books and other products, and for professional and promotional purposes. Businesses may use blogs to update customers, and hobbyists may seek to share information and instructions in their field of expertise. Popular blog platforms include Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr, and Typepad.
Why use a blog as the base for your Internet business? Because blog content tends to be fresher than that of static websites, search engines like Google and Yahoo cache this data more often, and therefore blog content is apt to show well in relevant search. The more you add to your blog, the greater the opportunity for high search results and consequently high traffic.
Of course, in order for the blog to actually produce revenue for you, it's important to ensure it is optimized to do just that. The journey toward making money with a blog begins with these simple steps:
1) Decide on a topic. What should you blog about? Basically you have two choices: for one, you can build a site focusing on something that appeals to a general audience, like movies and books, celebrity gossip or weight loss tips. If you are an authority on a niche subject, like scrapbooking or baking, you can parlay that knowledge into your site.
2) Decide on a platform. One advantage to starting a blog is the low investment involved. Most platforms offer free hosting with their service, with the option to upgrade to remove their ads. If you choose to set up a domain and hosting, you can install blog software on your site for instant publishing. Once you decide how to proceed, explore the template options offered by your blogging program and design to your preference.
3) Affiliate yourself. Web entrepreneurs primarily make their money through affiliate and/or ad programs, like Google Adsense, Commission Junction, and Amazon Associates. When you sign up to add special banners and links to your websites which advertise products and services from various companies, you stand to gain residual payment every time a site visitor clicks through and orders something. Blogger, which is owned by Google, allows for easy installation of Adsense, while widgets for Wordpress are available for adding Adsense and other popular affiliate coding to your blog. Choose affiliate programs which best match the content of your blog and promote the banners and links.
4) Keep the content fresh. It's important to update your blog daily so search relevancy remains high. If you feel you are unable to add new articles every day, you can post date material to go live on future dates so the blog is always populated. Widgets are also available to feed content on your subject into your blog in the event you are short on time or have writer's block. Don't let your blog become stale or neglected, or else you could lose valuable rankings.
5) Promote, promote, promote! Once your blog is up and running, you need to advertise it or else people won't read itand#8230;or click through your affiliate links. Use social media profiles with Twitter and Facebook to plug new blog posts, and use bookmark sites like Digg and StumbleUpon to highlight strong articles. If you are inclined to budget a campaign, sign up for Google Adwords or a similar program to get the word out. Use your blog URL in your e-mail signature, too - do whatever it takes to make your blog viral!
Above all else, enjoy what you blog, and don't be discouraged if you don't see the money rolling in immediately. Some "blog-preneurs" may find immediate success, while others must wait for their work to catch attention. For an example of a fairly new site that is generating income (and laughs!)
If you are passionate about your subject, however, it will show in your writing and ultimately in search. This in turn can convert readers into referrals for the commerce sites you promote.
