How a Resistor Works

Have you ever thought what controls the current in an electronic device? The devices or the electrical component which resists the current in a circuit is known as resistor. While making an electric circuit the main concern is controlling the current. Resistors are electrical components of a circuit which help in controlling the current of the circuit. Controlling the current helps in protecting the equipment connected with the circuit. Resistors are one of the most important parts of an electrical device. The current passes through the two nodes of the resistor and is modified according to the equipment usage.

Resistors are designed in many ways.The common type of the resistor used in electronic devices is made by carbon and clay and is known as carbon-composition resistor.The ability of the resistor to resist the current depends on the proportion of carbon to clay. There are different types of resistors used in electrical equipment. These resistors may be fixed and variable. The types of resistors are classified on the basis of type of material used, power rating and resistance value. Resistors do not have current flow but passively helps in reducing the current and controllingthe voltage in any electrical device. Carbon resistors are the most common type of resistors used. They are cheap and an inexpensive way to control current in a circuit. Film type resistors are another type of resistors used in electrical devices. Wire wound resistors are used in electrical device requiring high current handling requirement. In such resistors a wire is coiled and thus it can also be used as inductor. This type of resistor should not be used in AC circuits. Precision resistors are widely used in medical equipment like ultrasound, imaging and various other biomedical technologies. Current sensing resistors are a new concept and also one of the fastest used technologies nowadays. With new technology and product being evolved every day these resistors are considered the future of resistors. High voltage resistors are the most common for industrial uses.

We may not realize but without the use of a resistor no electrical device is complete. The resistor helps in balancing the current which is flowing in the device. In case of high current the resistors control the flow of the current and vice-versa id also true. For big industries where electrical equipment is used constantly high voltage resistors become very crucial. For an industry it comes under security measures to use correct resistors because a large number of employees are at risk there. As the equipment and their power equipment and their power requirement vary so does the resistor used in the equipment. It is very important to use the correct resistor in any electrical device.

There are many companies which manufacture resistor. If you are looking for using a resistor in your industry you must be cautious while buying it. A precise knowledge about the types of resistors is necessary before you buy it. There are firms which would provide you consultation also regarding the use of resistors.
