So your business has grown large enough that you are now looking into a dedicated server, but you have you are not sure which is right for you, a Linux or Windows server. Does it matter? If so, how are they different and which operating system is right for you? This is often a very confusing decision for many businesses because they are unclear if one is more beneficial than the other is.

The real argument comes from the stability of Windows vs. Linux dedicated servers. It may surprise you to know that Linux is actually the most popular type of server even though Windows is the most popular operating system for home users of the PC. It has been speculated that Linux is more secure than Windows, but at the end of the day, the security of both Windows and Linux servers comes down to the ability of the system administrators.
Performance between Windows and Linux servers is about the same, but Linux overall does outperform Windows simply because Windows tends to offer the one-size-fits-all packages and Linux dedicated servers offers extendible implementation. Overall, the end user will not see a performance difference between the two platforms.
In the end, you have to decide which is best for your business. In terms of security, again, both platforms are vulnerable if the system administrators are not skilled in security functions. Therefore, your attention truly needs to be on who is implementing your server rather than which platform is best. If you have Windows and Linux with the same security features side by side, you will not tell much of a difference, but if the Windows has less security, obviously, the Linux will outshine the Windows.
