Career Corner: Become a Doctor of Osteopathy
An increasing number of people are looking for holistic methods to address their health issues. That's why osteopathy is one of the fastest growing segments in the field of alternative medicine. If you believe that the practice of medicine should be non-invasive and that the best treatments for disease lie in proper nutrition and proper neuromuscular-skeletal balance, the field of osteopathy may be the right medical discipline for you. The National University of Medical Sciences offers a rigorous online self-paced course to earn a Doctor of Osteopathy degree, as well as an MBA in health care. Is it the right decision for you?
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a discipline of medicine founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still. Still believed that most diseases are caused by maladjustment of the musculoskeletal system and that the role of the doctor is to restore the body's natural musculoskeletal system. In 1892, he founded the American School of Osteopathy to teach his philosophy and system of healing. Today, osteopathy is a recognized medical discipline and osteopaths practice in all 50 states.
What Do Osteopaths Do?
Osteopaths receive some of the same training as other medical doctors, and in addition, receive training in "manipulation," a system of manual adjustments to the muscles, bones and ligaments. They treat all types of disease holistically, but can be especially helpful with neck and back pain, COPD, fibromyalgia, asthma, menstrual pain and many other chronic pain conditions.
Why Study Osteopathy?
The science of osteopathy is one of the most complete integrative medicine systems currently being used. Many osteopaths work in their own practices or as part of partnership practices or clinics.
As research increasingly confirms that osteopathic manual manipulation is helpful for many chronic diseases and to treat many types of injuries, there is a rising demand for osteopaths. The holistic approach combined with hands-on manipulation appeals to many people who don't want to take medications or submit themselves to surgery. Indeed, the growing demand for holistic practitioners suggests that osteopathy is a growing field.
