Importance of Soil Remediation
Many industries use chemicals that can be hazardous to the environment or the people or animals that live in that environment. If these chemicals contaminate the land around the facilities, the owners are required to remediate, or clean up, the pollutants. Samples of the soil and water are taken to determine the level and kinds of contamination present, and the contaminants will need to be reduced to safe levels through soil remediation. Soil remediation is the process of cleaning, reclaiming and revitalizing the soil according to the directives that have been outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency. The process is designed to make soil clean and safe for development or habitation by lowering pollutants to specific parts per million.
Various types of remediation are used, and the type used in a certain area or situation will mainly depend on the type of pollution present and the effects of the remediation efforts on the people, animals and environment. When more than one contaminant is present, several types of remediation may be needed in order to provide best results.
Excavation and dredging are among the most typical processes of soil remediation. They extract deeply contaminated soil, transport it to a specifically designated landfill and then restore the area using purified soil. Another process extracts contaminated ground water and soil in order to treat and purify it prior to returning it to the area. When an area is contaminated by explosive organic compounds, or VOCs, soil mixing is usually the best option for soil remediation. VOCs and certain other contaminates can be rather difficult to remove by way of conventional means because they break down into such fine particles.
Soil mixing requires special equipment that can attach directly to an excavator or other equipment. Mixing soil with a special reagent neutralizes the VOCs and allows the soil to be stabilized on site. The procedure may be performed with soil, sludge, drilling mud or dredged material, and it provides not just a more cost-effective way to remediate the soil but also a more homogenous blending of the substrate with the additive. This reduces or eliminates the usually exceptionally expensive need to transport and treat soil offsite.
A wide variety of tools and equipment is available to treat and remediate contaminated soil, such as axial mixers, auger heads and high-end pressure feeders that can be used as either single elements or integrated systems to help complete any soil mixing or remediation project.
