A Background on the Courses Related to Dental Hygienist Training

Those who wish to pursue a career in oral hygiene, it's important that they undergo dental hygienist training. There is a high demand for oral hygienists today. In fact, it's one of the sought after medical-related professions, next only to surgeons and doctors. In the next several years, this profession is likely to bring dentistry to new heights. Evolving trends in the medical fields indicate that oral hygienists are among the fastest professions to grow and have a high demand in just a short period.

There are a number of courses available to people who wish to explore the options related to dental hygienist training. There are three main classifications for these courses: degree, associate, and non-degree. The syllabus, curriculum, fees included and duration period of these courses greatly vary from one another. All the courses share one thing in common, though; they all have the goal of ensuring the students are equipped with the knowledge and skills in preventive oral health care.

In dental hygienist training, students can choose to aim for a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Those who go for a bachelor's degree in oral hygiene receive training that will prepare them for opportunities to teach in dental institutes and colleges, as well as work in the military, state prisons, state health departments, and public health care sector. The course duration for this degree is around 4yrs; however, there are several colleges that will allow you to finish it in just 32 months. What students should keep in mind, however, is that before they enroll in a bachelor's degree program in oral hygiene, they need to check that the program offered is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Only degrees offered by the accredited institutes will be considered by the employers and only those graduates will be allowed to practice as an oral hygienist in any state.

There are many universities offering bachelor's degree courses over the internet, making it even more convenient for students to attend school and complete the program. Students who complete their degrees successfully are known to have a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. The program is full-time and the course curriculum consists of general classroom education, clinical laboratory work, and other lecture components. In terms of job opportunities, there won't a lack of them for bachelor degree holders in this field. Those who complete the bachelor's degree program and have plenty of dental hygienist training can go on to pursue a master's degree.

Schools have special simulation laboratories to enable students to develop the skills they need to perform a hygienist's job. The simulation labs have artificial patients and students can train on performing special dental procedures on these patients. Students tend to learn much more quickly in these labs since they are actually doing what they are supposed to be learning instead of just being inside a classroom listening to lectures. Students spend several months in the simulation labs in this type of dental hygienist training, then they are given a proficiency test. After they pass their exams, they are chosen to work in an on-site dental clinic where they will handle real patients.

There are also non-degree courses available as a part of dental hygienist training. These courses include certification courses in radiology and dental assisting. These courses, however, are available only to those students who possess scientific backgrounds. Upon completion of the master's level course, the student will be awarded a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene. Students choose between writing a thesis or conducting a graduate research project. Associate degrees in oral hygiene last for a duration of two years or more and involve a certain amount of project work as well. Employment opportunities for individuals with these degrees are very limited compared to the ones with bachelor's and master's degrees.
