Waste water contains harmful contaminants and waste water management or sewage treatment pertains to how waste water is treated and cleaned. Because we use water in our daily lives, waste water is inevitable. Here, waste water normally comes from household sewage and industrial operators.

Mainly prioritizing public health and sanitation concerns are the processes linked to waste water management. Most of the time, contaminated water leads to diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. Considering how water is invaluable to our lives, we need waste water management other than for the protection of the general health of the society.

As of today, our sources for water are rather limited and so we have to save as much of it as we could. Predicted by the United Nations World Water development report in 2003 was a 30 to 40% decrease when it comes to the global supply of water for the following 20 years. Faced with these statistics, the need for effective waste water management processes become crucial.

What processes are involved when it comes to waste water management. Involved here are four fundamental stages but depending on the location of the treatment facility, there might be some alterations. Stage one involves the pre-treatment process.

What happens to the water is that it is strained, screened, and analyzed. The goal here is the removal of debris from the waste water, debris like stones, branches, and leaves. During the pre-treatment process, any traces of grease or lubricants from the waste water coming from an industrial factory will also be removed.

Primary treatment will only be possible after the waste water accomplishes the pre-treatment process and gets analyzed. Here, the leftover grease and oils tend to float while the sediments from the waste water sink at the bottom of primary clarifier tanks. The water will still contain bacteria after the removal of the sediments at the bottom and the floating grease and this is why chemicals are introduced.

The third step in waste water management is done to make sure that the final treated water is safe for releasing into designated grounds and other natural bodies of water. The water will contain harmful microorganisms and the introduction of chemicals to remove them is the third stage. The fourth and last step in the process of waste water management is disinfection.

A lot of people resort to the usage of chlorine especially when the goal is to produce clean potable water. Nowadays, we are bombarded with numerous environmental issues and this is why we are still in the search for other means by which to manage waste water effectively. In the future, people want to have greener and more practical methods to deal with water even if we already have an effective system today.
