Information You Need in an Auto Accident
Car accidents can happen quickly, and the stress and confusion immediately following an accident can leave you feeling flustered, frightened and confused. Having some basic information on hand and knowing what steps to take in the moments, days and weeks following an accident may be able to help you experience a more positive outcome.
Even if you always drive safely and follow the rules of the road, being prepared for any event can help you better handle an accident if you should experience one. Have your car insurance card, notepad and pen or pencil in your vehicle. If your phone does not have a camera, keep a disposable camera in your car, too. These items will help you take notes, document and get help in case of an accident.
Safety should always be a priority. In case of minor accidents, some states prefer that you move your vehicles out of the roadway as you trade information with the other driver. Check your state's laws so that you can be prepared before you are facing an accident. If there is serious damage and you cannot move your car, contact the police to file a police report, and contact your auto insurance company to have your car moved. If there are injuries, call 911.
Emotions tend to run high following auto accidents, but it is crucial to stay civil. Check that the other driver and his or her passengers are ok, get his or her information and keep the conversation to a minimum. Do not apologize, and do not admit fault. Names, numbers, and auto insurance information will all typically be necessary to fill out the claim. You will also need the make, model, year and license plate numbers of any vehicles that were involved.
Take notes on the accident, take pictures of any damage and injuries, document the area in which the accident occurred, note the time of day, the weather at the time of the accident, note the names and numbers of any witnesses and document any other relevant information that could help you file your claim. Request a copy of the police report, and make a note of the name, badge number and responding officer's phone number.
Once you have obtained all required information, you will need to contact your car insurance provider to file your claim. They may need a copy of the police report and the other information you gathered. If the accident was a result of the other driver's negligence or carelessness, you may also need to contact a car accident lawyer.
