Should You Wear Yoga Shoes?
Yoga shoes look exactly like the trainers or sneakers that you use for jogging or walking but they differ in the types of soles that they have. The soles of yoga shoes are much thinner which is meant to allow maximum flexibility. The shoes are also lighter to enable air circulation. These are pretty popular in the market today with the major sportswear houses making them, namely Puma, Adidas and Reebok. These names stock yoga shoes for women, as well as for men although the range is as wide as the ladies'.
But do you actually need to buy and wear these yoga shoes? You most probably have seen people doing yoga barefoot all the time. Yoga shoes are actually optional but they do you good. For instance, you might be used to having shoes on for your physical activities. There are some who might feel just bare without socks and shoes on, so wearing yoga shoes will definitely put you at ease as you do your stances and poses. Then there is also the factor of hygiene. You might want to wear shoes if you rent or share a yoga mat. You wouldn't want germs and bacteria that came from other people's bodies. If you practice yoga outdoors, surely it is advisable to wear shoes and lastly, if you find yourself slipping pretty often, then you'd better get yourself a pair to prevent yourself from slipping and tumbling over. Traction is great especially for yoga shoes, so be assured that you will get your grip if you have a pair on.
Now that you know the reasons why you should wear yoga shoes, you need to know how to choose a good pair. A good pair of yoga shoes will allow air circulation. Make sure that your pair has this before deciding to buy them. They should also feel light and not hamper your movements. Just like when buying any other pair of shoes, try them on and do a pose if possible. If it is comfortable and allows you to move in an agile manner, then it is for you. Make sure it isn't too tight; your feet need to have an allowance to move about in your shoes but of course, they mustn't be too loose either as you will risk getting blisters and corns.
Shopping for yoga shoes is easy as many sports stores carry them nowadays. Shopping online is also possible although not recommended, for it is best to try on the shoes and see how you feel in them.
