This is since fires can spread fast and you may not be able to handle it when it does. You can call 911, a relative or a friend. Other emergency numbers are 112 in Europe and 999 in North America. Once you reach them, ask for the fire service and tell them to come to your home or office immediately. Don't forget to give them your address and describe the fire. <br />?	Check everyone in your home or office and make sure everyone is accounted for. Take your pets outside too. Ask them to meet you at a safe meeting point. <br />?	Never let your kids play or use the fire extinguisher. Don't let them put out the fire no matter how small it may be. <br />?	Focus and don't panic. However, this is very hard to do in such cases so having prior training can help you a lot. <br />?	Check your safety before you attempt to extinguish a fire. Ask yourself if you are physically capable?  Kids, the elderly and people with disabilities will find it hard to carry and use one. <br />?	Check the exit points. Make sure these areas are clear for your immediate escape. Keep your focus and if there is a threat, leave right away. It is for this reason that the National Fire Prevention Association in the US recommends that fire extinguishers be placed near exit points. This way, people can make an easy escape in case of uncontrollable fire. <br />?	If there is toxic smoke being emitted, never attempt to put it our. Just leave it to the experts.<br />?	Check the structural safety of your building. Don't go near, burning floors and rafters. <br />?	Check for the type of fire extinguisher you have.  There are 5 main classes (in the US). They are categorized as A, B, C, D and K. Contents are usually dry chemical, water, CO2, halon or sometimes a special kind of powder.  <br />?	Class A is for wood, cloth, paper, various plastics, rubber and regular combustible fires.<br />?	Class B is for gasoline, grease and oil-based fires.<br />?	Class C is for electrical fires from tools, appliances and other equipment plugged in gear.<br />?	Class D is for water reactive metals lie burning magnesium such as in factories.<br />Class K is for wet chemical agents like animal fats, vegetable oils such as in kitchen fires as well as deep fryers.
